Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme that was originally created by Lainey from GingerReadsLainey and is currently being hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. To find out more information about this fun feature and how you can join in, please visit the Goodreads group for it here!
This week’s T5W theme is all about your favorite second books in series that are better than the other books in those series and, at first, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to come up with any answers for this tag. But then, after I did a bit of bookshelf exploration, I found that there were actually quite a few series where I preferred the second book in the series over all of the others. So, without further ado, let’s dive into this week’s T5W!
5. Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo
Siege and Storm is my favorite book out of the entire Grisha trilogy. It was full of action and romance and I absolutely loved every character in this novel. While Shadow and Bone was really amazing, it had a few flaws, and Ruin and Rising definitely wasn’t my favorite ending to a trilogy. Therefore, Siege and Storm was a really great second book in a series and I loved it a lot.
4. P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han
I absolutely love this novel! It is such an amazing sequel to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and, although I really did enjoy Always and Forever, Lara Jean, P.S. I Still Love You will always be my favorite in the TATILB trilogy and one of my favorite Jenny Han novels overall.
3. The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Oh my god, this book was amazing. It took me a while to get through the first book in this trilogy, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, and the last book in this trilogy, The Retribution of Mara Dyer, was a bit anticlimactic/disappointing. With that being said, I flew through The Evolution of Mara Dyer. It was such a good sequel and the plot was brilliantly put together.
2. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
This is quite possibly one of the best sequels I’ve ever read and my favorite novel that Sarah J. Maas has written. Compared to A Court of Thorns and Roses and even A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Mist and Fury tops them both. The plot, the unexpected plot twists, the characters, the slow-burning romance… I love this novel immensely.
1. Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
Any list that I make regarding amazing sequels has to include this novel. Six of Crows was one of the best books I’ve read and I was careful to not set my expectations too high for this sequel out of fear that I would be disappointed. Thankfully, this novel was everything I wanted it to be and more. I love this duology so much and Crooked Kingdom is an amazing duology conclusion.
My honorable mentions for this week (because I can never follow the rules and pick just five books for T5W) are Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi (although I do prefer Ignite Me over the rest of the Shatter Me books for obvious reasons, Unravel Me is brilliant), Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire, and Where She Went by Gayle Forman.
And that’s it for this week’s Top 5 Wednesday! I’m so glad to finally be participating in this weekly meme again because it is so fun to complete. What second book in a series do you prefer over the other books in that series? Let me know in the comments below and feel free to leave a link to your T5W post.
