This week’s T5W theme is most unlikeable characters! These are characters that aren’t supposed to be unlikeable, but you just weren’t fond of them at all. Just a bit of a disclaimer here: these are all solely my opinions! I am not trying to offend anyone in any way and I will try my best not to completely bash on any characters, however, I will give my honest opinions about them and my reasonings behind why I’m not very fond of them as literary characters.
5. Four from the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth
Okay, okay, let me start off by saying that I freaking loved Four in the original Divergent novel. I really did. I liked him a lot in Insurgent, too. So I don’t know what happened when I read Allegiant, but I finished that book and I had such a huge disliking for his character. Maybe it was because I really didn’t like his point of view at all or maybe it was the direction that the story went, but the last book in this trilogy really dampened my love for Four immensely.
4. Kilorn from Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Whilst trying to come up with some characters for this list, I was looking at my bookshelf and trying to decipher my least favorite character for each book I looked at. When I glanced at Red Queen, I realized that I really didn’t like Kilorn’s character. Like okay, I don’t completely dislike him, but I’m not in love with him, either. I don’t know, I just feel like he complains a lot and he’s kind of just… there.
3. Tess from the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu
I wasn’t that big of a fan of Tess during Legend, but I did like her character. And then Prodigy came along and I vividly remember getting so frustrated at her character numerous times and that really made me dislike her character for the rest of the trilogy. I guess she kind of redeemed herself in Champion, but eh, I still didn’t care for her character as much as I did during Legend.
2. Tariq from The Wrath & the Dawn duology by Renée Ahdieh
At first I thought that I would love Tariq’s character, but then I really grew to dislike him over the course of this duology. I guess he had some pretty valid points at times, but ugh, whenever he was in a scene in the book I found myself becoming annoyed with his character a lot.
1. Adam from the Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi
(I feel like it was obvious to some that I would include Adam from Shatter Me.) I’m going to admit it: I loved Adam in the first novel in this trilogy. I was so contently on board the Adam-train. And then, a few chapters into Unravel Me, my love for him slowly began to dwindle and by Ignite Me, I was so ready for him to leave. Exit stage right, Adam. BYE, ADAM.
The honorary mentions of this week go to Tamlin from A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas (I’m fairly sure that I won’t offend anyone when I admit that I sincerely loathe him) and Holden from The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger (I honestly never grew to like his character whatsoever). So, is there a main character or side character that you just never got around to liking very much? Comment below!
